La Universidad: Un Sueño Alcanzable/College: An Attainable Dream

In my experiences with working with Spanish-speaking parents at schools as well as at the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) level, one topic that parents always want to learn more about is how to prepare their children to attend the university in the future. They want to know which classes and exams students should take in order to put them on a college-going path, and they are always eager to learn about scholarships, college experiences, and resources for students who are first generation college students.

The U.S. Department of Education recently created a video in Spanish entitled “La Universidad: Un Sueño Alcanzable” which highlight one university student and the support and resources that have made her successful at the university level. This video lets both parents as well as students know that higher education opportunities are accessible to students, even when school counselors or other personnel told students that the university wouldn’t be a good option.

The video runs on the youtube network, which may be blocked in many school districts. I recommend that teachers and educators let both parents and students know about how to access the video while at home by giving them the website address. Check out the video for yourself:
