In the past we have highlighted the Seal of Biliteracy, an award of distinction that recognizes high levels of proficiency in English and another language. Many school districts in California have adopted and implemented the Seal of Biliteracy and to date thousands of graduating seniors have been awarded the seal on their diploma or transcripts.
The Seal of Biliteracy was originally sponsored by the advocacy organization Californian’s Together. School districts across the state voluntarily adopted their own rigorous criteria and implementation. In order to create uniformity across the school districts, an assembly bill was introduced that would establish a state-adopted Seal of Biliteracy. Assembly Bill 815 (i.e. the Seal of Biliteracy) has passed through the California Assembly and Senate and is currently on Governor Brown’s desk to be signed or vetoed.
